Acknowledgements

Last updated: September 30, 2026

Golden Hilal is built on the generous work of many others. We gratefully acknowledge the following sources, used with respect and attribution.

Qur’an text

The Uthmani Qur’an text is from the Tanzil Project (tanzil.net), used unmodified and with attribution. The "Amiri" Unicode Uthmani text is by Dr. Khaled Hosny.

Recitations

Qur’an recitation audio is streamed through the AlQuran Cloud API (alquran.cloud), which sources recordings from EveryAyah.com. All rights to the recitations remain with their respective reciters and publishers.

Translations

Fonts

Scheherazade New and Amiri Quran are provided by SIL International under the SIL Open Font License (OFL).

Gelasio (The Gelasio Project Authors) is used under the SIL Open Font License (OFL).

Recite mode

Recite mode listens with Tadabur-Whisper-Small (huggingface.co/FaisaI/tadabur-whisper-small), a fine-tune of OpenAI’s Whisper small (MIT License) on the Tadabur Qur’an recitation dataset, by its authors (“Tadabur: A Large-Scale Quran Audio Dataset”). It is published under CC BY-NC 4.0 and used in Golden Hilal under a separate license from its rights holder. Until it has downloaded, Recite mode listens with whisper-small-quran (huggingface.co/basharalrfooh/whisper-small-quran, MIT License). We converted both to whisper.cpp’s format and compressed them; they were not retrained. They run on your device with whisper.cpp (MIT License, ggml-org) through whisper.rn (MIT License, mybigday).

Prayer times, Qibla & Hijri

Prayer times are calculated on your device using the open-source “adhan” library. Qibla direction (great-circle bearing to the Kaaba) and the Hijri date are also computed on-device — no external service is used.
